Welwyn Garden City – Thoughts on Pedestrianisation of Town Center

posted in: Welwyn Hatfield 2

Dear Members,

As WGC approaches its Centenary in 2020, there is talk of monies being made available from the County Council to pedestrianise the town center. We are keen to ensure that the Garden City and all that it stands for is preserved.

You can hear us discussing this on BBC Three Counties radio. Just play the file below.

Sounds good – particularly pleased with the view on shared spaces. Did part of my MA in Urban Design on W.G.C public realm design and there are lots of excellent examples of where this has been done properly – largely from the Netherlands – https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=dutch+and+german+traffic+calming+and+shared+surface+streets&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiJ0JOoo_fTAhWiAsAKHTtWAg4QsAQIIQ&biw=1440&bih=855

Very important to keep spaces active and public realm design has a massive impact on this. Also – any money for Hatfield Town Centre as well? What about a twin-town design approach?

      Matthew hi,

Thank you for your support and interest. Our MP Grant Shapps is very much on board with getting this right and I will forward him your email.
Please bear in mind it is election time.

      Kind regards

      Nick
