Haileybury – ABF Curry Lunch

Dear Members and ABF Supporters,

We are celebrating the 81st Anniversary of the ABF, and VJ Day.

We will be guests of Haileybury School, and all proceeds will go to the ABF – The Army Benevolent Fund.

The Lord Lieutenant will be representing The King, and Inspecting the Cadets.

Our Speaker this year, will be

James Nicolson whose Uncle was the only Fighter Command pilot in the whole of the Second World War to be awarded the Victoria Cross. 

James will be speaking about his uncle’s exploits over the Channel and later in Burma. James is an interesting and Entertaining Speaker. Please see below for more details.

Tickets are £40 a head, with Table bookings at £360 for a table of ten.

The event is being held in Big School which is opposite the main Cricket Field. Cadets will be providing directions.

There is plenty of Free parking, and for anyone who needs to park near the venue, spaces are available. Haileybury is Wheelchair Friendly.

MY UNCLE, THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN VC

In this presentation, Jim Nicolson will talk about his similarly named uncle, Flight Lieutenant James Nicolson, who was the only Fighter Command pilot in the whole of the Second World War to be awarded the Victoria Cross. This was for his gallantry in a dogfight in the skies over Southampton at the height of the Battle of Britain. Jim’s talk focuses on his uncle’s early war experiences; the action which resulted in the award of the Victoria Cross; the impact that the award had on him and his wife; his subsequent death in action in Burma near the end of the war; and ending with the steps taken to remember his gallantry.

Jim served for thirty years as a police officer; working for most of that time in Soho and London’s East End, before moving to Hertfordshire from where he retired in 2002, as the Assistant Chief Constable.

He now works in Essex providing services for vulnerable adults.
